Mercoledi Musicale

Tributes to Stephen Sondheim have been showing up on the Internet both professional and personal. Of the many that I have seen for some reason this touches me the most.

Merrily We Roll Along (1981) was one of the least successful of Sondheim musicals but as always the score was a brilliant one but the conceit just didn’t work on stage. It follows the careers of three friends but backwards in time. It begins in 1976 and ends in 1957 – the year of Sondheim’s first success with West Side Story. Perhaps there was a touch of the autobiographical in the last song (1957) “Our Time”. An song of youthful optimism it sung here by Jim Walton, Lonny Price and Ann Morrison on the original cast album.

The work that Amy and Terry Lawrence and their crew put into this is remarkable. I believe it was done for Stephen Sondheim’s 90th birthday last year and that Sondheim enjoyed it immensely.

The word for December 2nd is:
Optimism /ˈäptəˌmizəm/: [noun]
1. hopefulness and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something.
2. The doctrine, especially as set forth by Leibniz, that this world is the best of all possible worlds.
Mid 18th century: from French optimisme, from Latin optimum ‘best thing’.
Is it just me or is there not a great deal of optimism in the world today?

  1. I’m fascinated by the Sondheim tributes that many if not most of them are based on “Sunday in the park” .
