Mercoledi Musicale

Last evening as I was looking through YouTube for a selection by Canadian soprano Erin Wall, who died this past week of cancer I came across a performance by another singer who was taken too early also by cancer: Lorraine Hunt Lieberson.

Many regard the 1996 Glyndebourne production of Handel’s oratorio Theodora one of the landmark performances of the last century. The combination of Dawn Upshaw, David Daniels, Richard Croft, and Hunt Lieberson conducted by William Christie gave a searing and emotional performance of Handel’s favourite, if seldom performed, drama of Christian martyrdom. Strangely the most moving of the airs are given not to the titular heroine but to her friend and fellow Christian Irene. In all three of those arias Hunt Lieberson captures the intensity, devotion, and zeal of the character but nowhere more than in As With Rosy Steps the Morn.

I had forgotten how simple but beautiful and moving this aria is and I offer this as a tribute to Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Erin Wall, as well as a colleague and friend who died this week.

The word for October 13th is:
Zeal /zēl/: [noun]
Great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or an objective.
Late Middle English: via ecclesiastical Latin from Greek zēlos.
It is interesting that though they have the same root a zealot is defined as “a person who is fanatical and uncompromising in pursuit of their religious, political, or other ideals.” And the Greek root translates as “jealous”.
