Lunedi Lunacy

Remember, remember …

Guy Fawkes for Bonfire Night
A Penny for the Guy!

… the fifth of November,
Gunpowder treason and plot.
We see no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!

Guy Fawkes, guy, t’was his intent
To blow up king and parliament.
Three score barrels were laid below
To prove old England’s overthrow.

By god’s mercy he was catch’d
With a darkened lantern and burning match.
So, holler boys, holler boys, Let the bells ring.
Holler boys, holler boys, God save the king.1

And what shall we do with him?
Burn him!

So what’s the story behind Guy Fawkes, “the last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions”2 ? Well perhaps this little movie trailer will give you an idea.

1There are several other verses about the pope, frankly all which today would be considered pretty hateful. So as always aiming for good taste I have omitted them.

On this day in 1925: Secret agent Sidney Reilly, the first “super-spy” of the 20th century, is executed by the OGPU, the secret police of the Soviet Union.
