May the Light of Each Day Shine Forth

Chag Urim Sameach! *חג חנוכה שמח

As friends and friends who are, for Laurent and I, family light the first candle on the Hanukkah menorah and invoke the first blessings of the festival we wish for them a wish that only strengthens with each year that we wish it:  May the light of each day shine forth from your homes as a witness of the miracle of the oil.

*Happy Holiday of Light

In previous years I have written about the origins, rituals and symbols of the Festival:

This Liberty Beyond Our Hopes – the origins of the commemoration of the re-dedication of the Temple.

I Have A Little Candle – the lighting of the menorah and spinning the dreidel.

Kindling New The Holy Lamps – modern menorahs and the ritual of the oil of the lamps.

Kindle the Light of Hanukkah – antique menorahs and Ma’oz Tzur a traditional hymn for the first day of the Festival.

And Call It Lights – the historian Josephus tell of the origins of Hanukkah.

On this day in 1969: Years of Lead: Piazza Fontana bombing: The offices of Banca Nazionale dell’Agricoltura in Piazza Fontana, Milan, are bombed.
